3.45 Royal Ascot (Day 4, Race 3)
Coronation Stakes (British Champions' Series) (Fillies'
Group 1) (Rnd) (Class 1) (3YO only)
Winner £154,535
Advice: 2 pts win Laugh Out Loud (5/1 general)
Bugie D’ Amore: Steadily progressive form for previous
connections in Italy, winning Group 3 under the care of Bruno Grizetti;
Excellent start to life with her new connections when staying on fourth in Prix
De Sandringham and not hard to see her improving upon that, but Laugh Out Loud
clearly the best of the pair and far more needed.
Cardigan: Excellent turn of foot when winning 6f maiden at
Haydock on sole start; Just 2 subsequent wins from 26 runs in that maiden and
while she’s clearly liked by connections to be pitched in at this level, not
seen since and can only be watched.
Elusive Kate: Made expected improvement from promising debut
when cosy winner at Kempton and has since landed two Group events in France
since, winning with ease on both occasions; Followed that up with convincing
Marcel Boussac win despite drifting very wide into middle of course; Never in
with a chance from stall 10 at Breeders Cup (pace too slow for her too) and
while much better thn that, this a belated comeback for one so talented and
fitness might be an issue.
Fallen For You: Looked a classy filly with debut win a May
Hill second on first two starts, and seems to have put Fillies Mile disappointment
behind her with easy win in AW conditions race, but disappointment last time
and more needed here.
Homecoming Queen: Improved with racing as 2 year old and
landed Leopardstown’s 1,000 Guineas trial on second run back but still a
massive shock when she romped away with the 1,000 Guineas by nine lengths
(Starscope and Laught Out Loud behind), having looked like she was a pacemaker
for Maybe (now non-runner); Unable to confirm that form on much faster ground
in Irish Guineas when fourth behind Samitar but the rain has come for her in
time and that improves her chances greatly; One gets feeling that she was still
flattened greatly by Guineas win but could prove hard to catch.
Intense Pink: No chance from early on debut but ran third
second time out and then bolted up at Pontefract off back of strong support (14
lengths); Failed to land a blow at Listed level last time out though and much
more needed here.
Irish History: Emphatic six and a half length winner of
Windsor maiden, drawing right away from seemingly moderate field although that
can take nothing away from her win; Stepped up to Listed level and just about
to make her challenge when bumped around; No surprise to see connections persevere
with her but others preferred.
Laugh Out Loud: Made quick progress this year, winning
maiden by 10 lengths before landing condtions contest; Only eight in 1,000
Guineas but still immature (keen all the way), and proved herself better than
that winning listed race at York and Group 2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly;
Major chance here and entitled to some serious respect.
Russelliana: Shaped as if she had a future when winning well
on debut and them coming well close home in the Cherry Hinton Stakes; Run very
poorly both times since though and makes little appeal.
Samitar; Came good on the promise shown as a 2 year old (notably
when winning Albany Stakes on second start here) when winning Irish 1,000
Guineas, a noteable step up on her 3 year olds form (had been disappointing before
win at the Curragh); Travelled like a class act on that occasion and has form
on soft ground last year, so high on list.
Starscope: Took many eyes when winning backend maiden at
Newmarket and once again better when coming an unlucky fourth in the Nell Gwyn,
having been blocked for a rail run at one point; Confirmed that promise when
second in the 1,000 Guineas (nine lengths behind Homecoming Queen; Ishvana won
Jersey Stakes on Wednesday) but poor last time out when stepped upto 10
furlongs, proving far too keen before and during the race; That form worked out
well through second Shirocco Star; Wouldn’t be surprise to see bold show but
others preferred.
VERDICT: A hard race to evaluate, with Homecoming Queen
surely flattered by her 1,000 Guineas win but also sure to be suited most by
the recent rain that’s fallen. She could be hard to catch from the front but Samitar
reeled her in with ease in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and also has some soft
ground form if you go back far enough. Both could be upstaged by LAUGH OUT LOUD,
who was so impressive when winning the Prix De Sandringham and is clearly a
much better filly than the one who was too keen when eight in the 1,000
Guineas. She’s not so much under the radar but 5/1 is still a surprise and she
can take this for Mick Channon. Elusive Kate is the best of these on last season’s
form but she’s taken a long time to come to hand and could need this, while
John Gosden’s other two fillies have it to prove on form (Fallen For You) and
also attitude (Starscope).
