Premiership 2013/14: Most Assists

With each and every passing year the range of available Premier League bets has stretched out and one of the best new markets is the Premier League’s top assists table. Using Boylesports, who settle the market on the Premier League website, we’re given a market which starts from 11/1 the field and pays 4 places, allowing for some good value bets.

Couti's relationship with Sturridge bought great things to
Liverpool last year
Chief amongst those is Philippe Coutinihio, who starred for Liverpool after moving from Inter in January and set the Premier League alight when making use of the deserved chance that he had finally been given in a first team and is one of the most promising youngsters in the Premier League this season.

A player of noted potential at Inter, where he broke through to Rafa Bentiez’s short lived first team and impressed on many fronts including the Champions League before falling out of favour with a range of managers and then being neglected before being offloaded in the January transfer window for what now seems like a paltry £8 million in favour of Mateo Kovatic, where he really took up, benefiting from Brendan Rodgers passing system and the improving form of Daniel Sturridge last year.

While he’s a joy to watch in full flow, what really stands out are his statics. In just 13 games for the Redmen, he’s notched up seven assists, at a rate of 186 minutes per chance, while he averaged only 104 minute for each clear cut chance created – the best of anyone last year. If getting a clear 38 games this year he should be aiming for 20 goals which would have won the title last year.

Able to play on the left – where he cuts in deep if Liverpool have the ascendancy in midfield,  a common occurrence especially at Anfield – or from deep when starting attacks on either side – his tactical versatility offer him an end of ways to get involved within attacking moves and as the chief creative influence in midfield, he will play every game possible, making the 16/1 on him leading this market by the end of the season easily the most attractive option.

There are many creative influences at Manchester City but Jesus Navas’s width and crossing ability makes him interesting at the same price. A constant sufferer of homesickness in his youth – to the point where he couldn’t go on Spanish training camps – he has since improved with it and is now the go to man for Del Bosque to break down stubborn defences, as proven by his performances for the national side over the last three years. The arrival of his teammate Alvaro Negredo, who scored 51 goals alongside him at Seville, is a massive help, while he will be supplying the strongest strikeforce in England – Augero, Negredo, Jovetic, and Dezko, with two of them being excellent headers - which is an obvious pointer to his chances. He makes more appeal than David Silva, who is likely to have to share spoils with central midfield partners Yaya Toure and Fernandinhio.

Juan Mata was 22-1 when he took this market last year and is half the price today, but for good reason as one of the planet’s standout performers from the midfield. There’s a worry that his Chelsea team mates Eden Hazard and Oscar may well infringe upon his total this year with the trio likely to be playing more often than not under what’s likely to be a 4-2-3-1 system this season, but he beat Hazard to the honour last year and with Chelsea not likely to be held back by strikeforce issues this season he should put up a bold bid to retain his title.

Santi Cazrola can have another fine season but has a fit Jack Wilshere to contend with this season along with Theo Walcott and was a long way behind in this market last year and a more interesting contender would be Robin Van Persie who made a hatful of goals playing the advanced role alone for Manchester United.
