1.15 Cheltenham
Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase (Class 2) (4YO plus)
Winner £12,512
Advice: 1 pt win Dynaste (15/8 Bet Victor, Stan James)
Carlito Brigante: Very useful hurdler, wide margin winner of
Coral Cup at 2011 Festival and then placed in Grade 1 hurdles twice afterwards;
Chasing career not lived upto those heights considering that more often than
not he’s had his ground over fences and well behind Unioniste at Aintree last
time; Better than that
Fingal Bay: One of the top novice hurdlers of last year,
being the only horse to beat Simonsig all season in Sandown Grade 2 before the
turn of the year, and then impressing with altitude when winning Challow Hurdle
and second in Sefton Hurdle (unlucky, ridden too hard too early); Made to work
hard for his chasing debut at Chepstow but did a lot right and should go well
with that under his belt.
Dynaste: Best of these over hurdles based on his fourth and
second to Big Bucks last year, that coming after his runaway handicap win at
Haydock; This his first try at this trip in a good while but gets 5lbs from
main rival on form figures in Fingal Bay and never lacked for speed, so will be
hard to beat.
Thehillofuisneach: Racked up a four times over hurdles last
year but exposed in Grade 2 company and in the Pertemps final; Look elsewhere.
Unionsite: Promise in pair of Listed handicap hurdles in
France when staying on late and never nearer, but ran right away with last
start for Gulliame Macaire in 4yo Chase at Auteil; Good chasing debut at Aintree
when jumping well and going on from long way out to fight to victory
(connections suggests he’d have been even better had fences not been ruled out
due to low sun); Can go on again from that and make case felt but this is a far
tougher assignment for all that he has promise.
VERDICT: A top class novice chase to kick off a top class meeting.
On form this concerns the extremely promising Unioniste, Fingal Bay, and
DYNASTE, who gets the vote considering that he gets 5lbs from Fingal Bay (who was rated sightly lower over hurdles) and is the bigger of
the two at the top of the market. This his first try at 2m4f since finishing
sixth in the EBF Final of 2011 at Sandown but he’s got a tremendous engine and won
with ease first time out last season. Those who think he will win well are also advised to look closely at the 14/1 on offer for the RSA; Pipe's Grands Crus took a similar route and ended up being a hot favourite for the race, and Boston Bob - our ante post pick - is yet to run, allowing for some changes in the market.
