John Porter Stakes 2013

1.50 Newbury
Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes (Registered As The John Porter Stakes) (Group 3) (Class 1)  (4YO plus)

Winner £34,026

Advice: 1 pt win Noble Mission (7/4 Bet365)

Allied Powers: Good record over this trip on ground with cut in it, and second last year, but lost his form afterwards and now an 8yo on seasonal debut; Best to look elsewhere.

Fattosta: Well suited by give last year, winning well at Ascot off 99 in October, but then found life harder upped to Group 3 level when only sixth here and well beaten both starts at Meydan, albeit when second latest.

Meganisi: useful dual purpose horse, impressive when winning Novice hurdle in November last year and coming here from strong recent campaign over hurdles More needed here.

Ed De Gas: Looked to have a big future when winning first three races in style of very good horse, but expose since and will need to have come on a lot to think of overturning form with Noble Mission here.

Guarantee: Beaten a long way into seventh in the St Ledger when last seen but had been extremely progressive beforehand, landing Melrose with a degree of comfort off mark off 95; Can still do better and of interest here even if these may not be calmer waters.

Model Pupil: Only the five starts but plenty of ability as judged by his maiden win at Newmarket over trip too short for him and unlucky Group 3 second; Returned in fine form when clear cut winner of conditions stakes and can go well here, for all this will be greater test of speed.

Noble Mission: Much vaunted full brother to Frankel who has done himself proud with plenty of solid staying efforts last year, notably when only just second to stablemate at Royal Ascot in Group 2 and fourth in Ledger Trial at York

Universal: Progressive last summer on turf and now finding improvement on AW, winning off 101 in good style, although he may just be finding form once again; Needs respecting but others preferred.

Quiz Mistress: Second in Heritage Handicap last season and then winner on testing ground at Saint Cloud towards end of season; Wants a stiffest test.

VERDICT: NOBLE MISSION has the best for of any in the field, will find the ground perfect, and comes from a stable having a great start to the season, so makes obvious appeal to land just a third career win at the main expense of Model Pupil and Guarantee, both of whom have plenty of promise this season.
