Clermont Auvergne have been cruelly denied upon so many
European occasions but they’ve looked like a team with a renewed desire for
yellow success and they can best Montpellier in the first of the weekend’s
Heineken Cup quarter finals. Games at this level are usually a very close run
affair but Clermont, 6/4 favourites for the tournament, are giving up 10 points
on the handicap for today’s affair, which against a side like Montpellier (who possess all the ingredients needed for European sucess and would be fearsome opponents at home) , is a
huge ask, but Clermont have one of the meanest home records in sport with their
winning run at the Stade Marcel Michelin now standing at 59 matches in all
competitions.
Leinster have been their nemesis in recent times but the way
they knocked out the Irishmen this season suggests that they’re ready to take
the next step and they can win handsomely here if keeping their nerve. A home
handicap of 11 is fair enough but the home points line of 26 would have been
passed in all but one their pool gams and in several home games at the Stade
Marcel Michelin in the Top 14 this season.
