2012 Olympics - Track Cycling (Day 5)

The Women's Omnium podium
Familiar faces (those of Trott, Edmonson & Hammer)
look set to set to dominate the Women's Omnium once
again at London 2012

We’ve already seen Britain take 5 golds at the Velodrome during London 2012 and hopes are very high for the precious Laura Trott – World Champion earlier this year who boasts 7 carrier gold medals – to take Women’s Omnimum gold and cap off a fantastic week for the young Brit. Part of the team that set six world records when smashing Sarah Hammer’s Team USA in the Pursuit, her flying lap win over specialist sprinter Clara Sanchez – has put her in pole position for gold after 1 of 6 events. Since the introduction of an elimination race to this event, Sarah Hammer (Silver in the team pursuit with Jennie Reed and Dotsie Bausch) has taken silver and a bronze from two world championships and won the London test event for this. Only fifth in the flying lap, she has stronger events to come and is tempting for a medal, considering how much ground she made up in the latter events of the world championships where she let herself down badly in the elimination and also the scratch there, leaving herself 10 points down after three events. Anette Edmonson (closest to Trott in Melbourne on home turf) is currently third in the standings and is an interesting 5-1 shot for glory although it’s hard to see her reversing Melbourne form. The 4/5 on Trott could look very big after the points and elimination races – she was eighth in this at Melbourne and then 17th in London’s test event – and she looks set to have a cracking chance of gold. Canadian Tara Whitten (fourth at the Worlds) can’t be discounted either although these top three looks to have the measure of the field.

In the men’s Sprint, Jason Kenny should get gold and has looked exceptional on the track so far despite being beaten by Gregory Bauge in the World Championship final. If ever that should change then it’ll be here but Gregory Bauge can’t be 11/4 in a two horse race given his record at major finals, having beaten Kenny in Melbourne earlier this year.

Advice

2 pts Laura Trott (4/5 Skybet)

1 pt Gregory Bauge (11/4 Skybet)
