Premiership 2012 - 13: Chelsea v Reading

It’s early days yet of the new football season but this Chelsea side looks to be in great shape and can prove their good health with a convincing victory over promoted Reading tonight. Roberto Di Matteo’s side had an awful League campaign last year but that was one which was truncated by managerial and defensive issues and after a storming end to their campaign – they are Champions of Europe and the FA Cup winners after all – their new look team has bright prospects for the new season.

Eden Hazard
New summer signing Eden Hazard (seen above) turned in the performance of the weekend, assisting twice notably with a truly special turn and pass to supply Ivanovic for the 1st goal while being felled for the second, and the Belgian’s talents are used to be the focal point for many once again. What was especially notable was the inventive, attractive football that was played by Di Matteo’s side inside the first 10 minutes which had been craved by owner Roman Abromovich.

Wigan got into the game much more after that and Victor Moses showed exactly why Chelsea have been linked with him with a sterling display, but Di Matteo’s side were simply resting on a two goal advantage and look to be a force to be reckoned with this season off the back of some smart investment (Oscar looked extremely smart in the limited time he got to impress towards the end).

Reading made a solid start to life in the Premiership when drawing 1-1 with Stoke on Saturday and can feel aggrieved to have let in the only goal they game away through a really shocking error from goalkeeper Adam Federicici, but this will be a far harder test than that and they were fairly subdued, albeit by an established Stoke outfit, on their return to the top flight. Many could be looking towards Chelsea to control the game and beat Reading to nil but Brian McDermott’s side have scored in 19 of their last 20 and Chelsea kept just 4 clean sheets at home last season. Roberto Di Matteo’s side are a much more tempting proposition to score 3 or more goals tonight at 21/20 with Sportingbet, a feat they achieved in half their home games last year.

The likes of Hazard and Juan Mata are huge creative threats to supply Fernando Torres – who has looked in much better shape throughought the summer than he has all year –up front while goals come from all areas of the side as shown on a number of occasions last year (and on Sunday with Invanovic’s cool finish). Reading aren’t a side to roll over easily but Chelsea are more than capable of reaching a 3 goal target.

Advice

2 pts Chelsea to score 3 or more goals (21/20 Sportingbet)
