Will revenge ever be sweeter for Andy Murray? Exactly 4 four
weeks on from his defeat by Roger Federer, Andy Murray will attempt to gain redemption
for his defeat in the Wimbledon final just under a month ago as he faces Roger
Federer for the second time this Summer on Centre Court at Wimbledon.
Murray's defeat to Roger Federer at Wimbledon tied up the
pair's head-to-head record at 8-8 but that meeting was their only clash on
grass and all of Murray's wins have come in the shorter three-set matches
between the two.Beaten 3-1 in the final of Wimbledon, Murray is seen to have a
stronger chance of glory today than 4 weeks ago and some strong cases can be
made for Murray turning around the form.
The Scot looks much happier now than he did all through
Wimbledon, having expressed relief to reach the gold medal match - "Before
the tournament started that was the goal, to try and win a medal. So to
guarantee a medal is great and I'll go for it in the final" – and also the
more aggressive tennis he’s played throughought the tournament, including his semi-final
win against Novak Djockovic, where he broke the serve of Novak many times to
win in straight sets.
Federer needed four hours and 26 minutes - the longest
three-set singles match in the Open era - to grind down del Potro and later
admitted to being "extremely drained", although Mrruay himself
essentially played 5 sets afterwards when he won mixed doubles quarter-final and
semi-final with Laura Robson.
It’s a damn tight one to split, but Federer looks sure to be
advantaged by the 5 set format of the final, and Murray going to lay everything
on the line possible to seal a place in British tennis and sporting history
following the recent haul of golds for Team GB. Murray’s got a cracking chance
but the class of the Swiss may come through as it did at Wimbledon and he looks
a good bet for gold, with the 3-1 correct score and 42 or more games looking
like solid value in wha’s sure to be a marathon match.
