York Stakes 2011

3.05 York

Sky Bet York Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1)  (3YO plus)
Winner £56,710

Pick: Twice Over (win)

Owner detailsTwice Over: Will win this and win this well if able to run to the form that saw him land the Eclipse at Sandown and Champion Stakes (for second time) last season and does have valid excuses for two of three high profile failures (latest in very high class event); Stable in form and should make bold bid if back to best to defy 3lbs penalty.

Owner detailsClass Is Class: Has had his problems in the past but well upto Group company now, as he proven when drawing right away form solid yardstick Tazeez (reopposes) in strong Sandown Listed event last time out; Can make a bold bid.

Owner detailsRansom Note: Threatened to be a group performer with Brittainia handicap win last season, and showed merit of that when taking big York race over straight mile at Ebor meeting; Confirmed his arrival at pattern level with all the way in in Earl Of Sefton Stakes and while he’s been well beaten the last twice, those were tilting at windmills; Can go well here; Competition for lead in big  way would hurt his chances.

Owner detailsSpatapadi: Formerly high class stayer for Sir Michael Stoute, he is beginning to show the same sort of form for Brian Ellison, having run a stormer to grab fifth place after a poor trip in the John Smith’s Cup; This a big step up and should find a few too good.

Owner detailsTazeez: Cambridgeshire winner and two time Group 3 winner who also has a third in the Arlington Million to his name; Returned from Dubai with a good runner up effort to Class Is Class and will need a lot more than that to reverse form.

Owner detailsElanora Duse: Remarkable amount of progression last year, going from handicap second to winning Blandford Stakes (carer best Yorkshire Oaks third in-between, also forgiven flop on last run); Needed the run badly on return (trip far too short) but underwhelming when well held in admittedly strong Lancashire Oaks and while she has every chance if at her best (strong stayer so this in form rider will suit) has to prove she can run to her best ability.

Owner detailsDominant: Had struggled to confirm the impression he was unlucky on his seasonal debut in London Gold Cup but came right away in sales event last time; Should go well here although this is a serious step up in class.

VERDICT: A really good renewal. The good form of Sir Henry Cecil’s string gives hope that TWICE OVER will be able to run to something like his best and give weight away to Class Is Class, Elanora Duse, Dominant and Ransom Note
