2.05 Ascot
Jaguar XKR-S Winkfield Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner £12,476
Pick: Trumpet Major (win)
Comical: Had more than enough to spare when opening his
account at Yarmouth just 11 days ago (respected on that basis), and while ground might be a problem, also
has to improve again in this company.
Jack Who’s He: Ran a belter of a race in the Coventry
considering circumstances but has not run upto that form since, and others more
progressive with ground an unknown.
Pearl Charm: Won on debut despite running green early and
needing to be switched, but never in any real danger; Of obvious interest for
top two year old team and should go well here.
Sound Advice: Won on debut despite doing everything wrong,
hanging across track as he drew clear; Disappointing in Superlative Stakes but
maybe best forgiven that and still has the scope to progress.
Talwar: Never really going on debut and struggled to get
into it and completely different horse when making running at Sandown, never in
danger when asked; Can make a bold bid.
Tigers Tale: Better than bare result both starts in 7f
maidens but will find calmer waters than this.
Trumpet Major: Finished ahead of St Barths when third on
debut at Newbury in May (probably should have won) & better again when off
the mark at Goodwood next time; Berter than Coventry run suggests (trouble in
running and looked after) and can go well here despite being passed over by Hughes.
VERDICT: Hard to be dogmatic about this. Richard Hannon’s
Pearl Charm is likely to be the choice of many, having gotten the vote of
Richard Hughes but I wouldn’t be so hasty to discount TRUMPET MAJOR based on a
poor run at Royal Ascot last time.
