Glorious Goodwood 2011 Day 3 - Supporting Races

They say that words can’t describe him, which is palpably unfair, given that any adjective would do Frankel’s Sussex Stakes win justice. I only thought he’d win from Monday, but never like that and never with that much, ease, class or substance. Canford Cliffs, who had just previously beaten a 13 time Group 1 winner, was beaten from 2 out – Drifting made only a small difference – and he was 5 whole lengths behind.

Away from Frankel, we had a return to form in spectacular style as Chandlery was the benefit of a great front running ride from Richard Hughes (no small amount of luck as well with Red Duke trapped off the rail) to win the Vintage Stakes; Another eyecatcher was Rockinante in second, who should take a group race when asked.

But that was then topped by Galway Plate Gamble Bahrain Storm, who was advised at 10/1 before being hammered down to 5/1 at the off, which was still the best priced winner we had and hopefully it’s going to be more of the same although today’s fare is just as hard.

The highlight of the day’s racing is the Goodwood Cup but the best race of the day is probably the opener (2.05), which sees the best 3yo handicapping form matched up, and what a race it is.

Whatever wins this will certainly be group class which is good seeing as Fulgur (left) has been tried in Group 2 company already this season and come out with credit, when fifth in ground too soft for him in the King Edward VII Stakes. That form is solid enough without saying but his Heritage handicap win, when coming from out of the pack to catch Mijjhar, says that he’s a horse who’d be able to handle a big rise again – I think that it’s the best form in the field - and a 10lbs might not stop him from following up here.

If that should prove enough – Apologies for taking the dumb and dumber route it would seem to some – Then the one to beat him might well be the third that day, Labarinto, on account of his 9lbs pull for a 3 & ¾ length beating at Newmarket, having not gotten the best of runs. Having needed his seasonal debut, he was caught out by a lack of pace and two decent rivals in the London Gold Cup afterwards, form which looks very solid now, and his latest effort proves he’s still a horse on  the up. I’m more than aware that similar types from Freemason Lodge have had close misses this week – Modun and Arch Fire both would have won in another furlong – But there seems to be no untoward traits with this horse and it would be hoped that Ryan Moore can break his run of seconds this week.

“The Real Article” is a very apt phrase for the Galway Hurdle (4.50) favourite after what has to be one of the most controversial rides of recent times when he went down by only a neck in the Grimes Hurdle.  There was a furore over just how he was ridden, given that a discretionary penalty of just over a stone would have been incurred had he won (he should have in all reality). Now rated 127, he’s seen as 18lbs well in and should take some beating, although at that price – Bearing in mind it could go off shorter – You’re not giving much at all away.

Captain Cee Bee - Can go well in Galway Hurdle
Given the previous comments made about the favourite many will be perplexed to see me put up Captain Cee Bee but he has more than enough to recommend him and that’s without him being 10/1.

Few horses as good as him have taken their chance here. Let us not forget, this is a Supreme Novice Hurdle winner who has also won a Grade 1 over fences, along with several other wins at Graded level. He was a lucky winner of the Grimes Hurdle admittedly but he jumped with some fluency and will have needed the run too, so better can be expected today. And by placing an each/way bet at 10/1 should he come in the first four then he’d pay nearly as much as a win would on the Real Article.

I have to stop at that but there’s one horse that I’d feel sick if mentioning and it won. People have been saying that The Real Article is hugely well in but Hidden Universe was second (albeit beaten nine lengths) in a Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Punchestown when last seen and on his maiden hurdle win (effortless) and his Deloitte Hurdle fourth (Classy opposition) he can be expected to make a bold bid off just 10 – 7 and should anything happen to Captain Cee Bee beforehand, then he’d make a great backup.

Advice

1 pt win Fulgur, 2.15 Goodwood (5/1 Ladbrokes)

1 pt win Labarinto, 2.15 Goodwood, (13.2 Ladbrokes)

1 pt each/way Captain Cee Bee, 4.50 Galway (10/1 William Hill)
