Summer Mile 2011

3.45 Ascot
Totesport.Com Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (4yo+) Winner £56,710

Pick: Dick Turpin (win)

Dick Turpin: Revelation last year when running with credit in several classic and Group 1 races & back in style with easy win in Bet365 Mile at Sandown; Disappointing when well beaten in Lockinge and when last in Prix D’Isphan but will make these all go if at his best.

Cityscape: Signed off last year with wins in Listed and Group 3 company, a nine length win in the Joel Stakes possibly exaggerated by soft ground; Bettered that form again when clear second to Dick Turpin in bet365 Mile (winner not reached that form since) and his Queen Anne third is the standout; One to beat if he runs.

Fannulter: Won twice at Listed level, one on AW last season and bettered that form when third in Zabeel Mile in UAE earlier this year; Back to top form when unleashing strong turn of foot to win Diomed Stakes at Epsom latest; Can go well although small field might not suit.

Fareer: Has struggled since coming second in the Zabeel Mile in the UAE, ending up a well beaten eight in two decent handicaps on return to the UK; Passed over at this level.

Red Jazz: Tough and consistent horse all throughout last year, the highlight when winning the Challenge Stakes at the backend of last season; Good return when a nice third in UAE and also then when fifth in the Lockinge; Could make a bold bid.

Side Glance: Progressive this year, slamming useful opponents in Listed race here before doubling up at Windsor latest; Can go on again but this is a stiff test and will be at a disadvantage if they go slowly here, which is possible.

VERDICT: If all show their best, a high class field. Cityscape is the pick if enough rain falls to make him run but that looks unlikely to a chance is taken on DICK TUPIN proving back to his best form and defying a penalty.
