King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2011

4.30 Ascot
King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored By Betfair) (British Champions' Series) (Group 1) (Class 1)  (3YO plus)
Winner £603,962

Pick: Workforce (win)

Owner detailsDebussy: Here as a pacemaker for field.

Owner detailsRewilding: Graduated from Andre Fabre's stable with flying colours when taking Cocked Hat Stakes in great style and ran good race in Derby, as good if not better when easy winner of Great Voltigeur at York; Made amends for St Ledger disappointment in big way when hacking up in Sheema Classic but career best again when upsetting So You Think in Prince Of Wales’s Stakes here over 10 furlongs; Huge chance up in trip.

Owner detailsSt Nicholas Abbey: Looked set for big things at two, having shown great turn of foot to land Racing Post Trophy & recaptured that spark after disappointing period with wins in Ormonde Stakes (by 9 lengths) and Coronation Cup; Had to scramble for latter success but never going on unconventional track and slow pace compromised him; Big player here.

Owner detailsWorkforce:  Realized immense promise last year when breaking track record to win Derby by seven lengths, following up with tenacious Arc success at Longchamp; Deeply impressive comeback when, giving 7lbs and a beating to useful field at Sandown on reappearance and gallant in defeat to top class So You Think in Eclipse last time; One to beat back at trip, and may be best forgiven awful run here in this race last yet.

Owner detailsNathaniel:  Been rapidly progressive in just 5 career starts, finding only Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach too good in Chester Vase before then romping home in King Edward VII Stakes over C&D; Can go on again but has top class older opposition to tackle.

VERDICT: A renewal for all to savour and one to dispel the recent critics of the event. If WORKFORCE is forgiven an errant run in this contest last year then he’d be closer to evens then his current price and he can add this to his Arc and Derby victories, with cut in the ground no problem to him. Rewilding is to be feared having shown a dangerous amount of ability over 10 furlongs, while this will allow St Nicholas Abbey to show his true ability while also testing it to the limit. Nathaniel won’t be disgraced.
