3.45 Goodwood
bet365 Molecomb Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner £22,684
Pick: Crown Dependency (win)
Boris Grigoriev: Ran into high standard early – season colt
in Tough As Nails on debut and made amends in weaker event as same venue; Went
too hard and outstayed on next start but ran into two good horses last time out
over 6 furlongs latest; Should go well from the front at this trip under visor.
Burwaaz: Looked sure fire winner when beating all but
subsequent winner Eureka on his debut, having pulled all the way; Didn’t need
to do much more when winning at Leicester but Norfolk run was hugely
eye-catching, coming late on in isolation on the far side; Well beaten by
Harbour Watch last time out and others make more appeal here even back to five
furlongs.
Charles The Great: Charles The Great: Made his debut in well
represented maiden, improved when beating Boomerang Bob with fair bit in hand;
Unplaced in Norfolk but back to best when making all in Super Sprint; Can go
well.
Chunky Diamond: Much improved when getting off the mark in a
5f Windsor maiden recently (had been beaten in decent events first twice) but
should find a few too good for him.
Church Music: From speedy family (half-brother to no less
than 3 winners at this trip) and showed precocity and promise when ready winner
of York maiden; Disappointing in July Stakes but no surprise if he were to
prove much better than that.
Crown Dependency: Made a most taking debut when easy winner of
maiden here (6 furlongs) on debut last month & eyecatching in Norfolk
(ahead of Burwaaz) when not getting a clear passage late on; Can do well here
for yard aiming for a hat – trick in here.
Powerful Wind: Unable to follow up wide margin win at Bath
last time when giving away more weight than he could handle but exposed anyway
and this asking too much of him.
Requinto: Has impressed with raw speed on all but one start
(when held up over 6f) and unbeaten at the minimum trip, having proven too
strong for useful rivals on both occasions; This his hardest task yet but
should go well especially if getting to the lead.
Stonefield Flyer: Bumped into two decent horses on his first
two starts, before blitzing rivals in ordinary Newcastle auction maiden;
Improved when runner up to Group 2 winner Frederick Engels and again impressive
when winning 4 runner Doncaster listed event; Will make another bold bid.
Hidden Passion: Easy winner latest but that at 4/11 in a
poor field; Well beaten on only try in pattern company beforehand.
Miss Work Of Art: Well backed to make an impressive winning
debut and stepped forward markedly when beating long odds on Magic City &
another impressive winner at Ascot; Ground things out over the minimum trip at
York so should have been suited by the step up in trip at Newmarket latest;
Needs to bounce back.
On The Dark Side: Managed to win on debut when well backed,
sticking her head out to get better of three way tie; Woodcote third has been
fairly represented since and no way that her Royal Ascot form is true given how
hard she went early; Never able to make amends in Super Srpint and passed over
with ease.
Pyman’s Theory: Has shown a high level of form on occasions
and would not be without a chance if able to repeat her National Stakes win;
That said, been exposed since.
Vocational: Has proven to be a more than useful early season
2yo, winning twice but bettering form in defeat; Needs more and well held in Queen
Mary; Will have competition for lead.
VERDICT: A fiercely competitive renewal. The Irish pair of
Boris Grigoriev and Requinto will take some catching but CROWN DEPENDENCY’S slightly
unlucky Norfolk third sets a high standard and the stable going for a hat – trick
in this race know exactly what’s required. Of the others, Stonefield Flyer
makes most appeal.
