Newmarket July Meeting -Cherry Hinton Stakes

2.25 Newmarket (July)
Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (Fillies' Group 2) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner £34,026

Pick: Interobil (each/way)

Betty Fontaine: Has proven very successful in just over a month, winning 3 out of her four races and scoring narrowly but decisively last time out in conditions company; Should run a respectable race although this might be flying too high.

Caledonia Lady: Did show a bit of promise when close fifth of 10 on  debut at Leicester but left that miles behind when all but causing a huge upset in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, saying on having been switched for a run (may well have won over today’s trip) and has to rate a major contender here.

Gamilati: Came second in an exceptionally strong maiden which has produced the Albany winner (Samitar, 3rd) the Chesham third (Self Centered, 5th) & a 17 length winner next time (My Propeller, 8th; Reopposes); Headed by promise newcomer from stable and will win a race but maybe not today.

Illunaglass: Backed into odds – on for debut and won well despite flashing tail at the stat and a furlong out and sure to progress from that; Confirmed that promise when third in the Albany on ground that wouldn’t have suited and can go well here.

Intetrobil: Backed like a good thing and won in same style when running out 6 length winner of Redcar maiden despite having dwelt in the stalls; Travelled like one of the best in the race before getting chinned close home by winner on soft ground and can go well here with conditions in her favour.

Miss Work Of Art: Well backed to make an impressive winning debut and stepped forward markedly when beating long odds on Magic City & another impressive winner at Ascot; Ground things out over the minimum trip at York last time and step up in trip is going to help, so has to be taken into account for team who have strong juveniles.

 My Propeller: Underwent transformation for first run when destroying her maiden field by 17 lengths on the bridle last time out, barely coming out of a canter; Has to be group class based on that evidence but these are deep waters.

Pink Sapphire: Came out well behind Shumoos despite shaping nicely on debut and put that experience to good use when cantering home at Salisbury; That may not have required much improvement and fully tested here. ]

Russelliana: Showed taking amount of precocity for one bred for middle distances (dam placed over 7f-1m at 3, half-sister to top-class Notnowcato) when winning well at Leicester (Listed third held in places) and significant that she’s sent here; Can go well.

 Sajwah: Won with something to spare despite edging left on Warwick debut and looked sure to go on again;

Shumoos: Made most impressive debut seen by a British 2yo this year when spreadeagling Haydock maiden opposition (form rock solid); Beaten by only a short head in Queen Mary, quickening but finding one too good; Can go well in bid for compensation here.

VERDICT: With so many contenders, maybe a race to watch rather than play in, as the acid test of just which juvenile fillies’ race was better at Royal Ascot. The suspicion is that both renewals were above average this year but the one that makes most appeal on what’s shown so far is INTEROBIL, who looked so good until folding on tiring ground in the Albany late on. She can get the better of Illunaglass again, and Queen Mary principals Shumoos and Caledonia Lady, of which the latter may present value. Miss Work Of Art is probably the best of the Fahey juveniles seen so far and is accorded respect.
