Glorious Goodwood Day 1 - Handicaps & Others

After a dreadfully sad Saturday things have gone a bit better for us as Rivera Poet, having drifted out to 2/1 pre – race, came in at Galway, to add to our successful back of Uruguay to land the Copa America in 90 minutes on Sunday, along with 2 big bets on the cricket coming in earlier in the week.

Modun - Worth supporting in the Glorious Goodwood opener
While the draw was never really in it, it was still a great game that deserved a result and gave plenty of pointers for the series. For future reference, this India side looked unfit and unprepared and can only go on from this, as has been the case in nearly every series they’ve played (they clawed back a draw with South Africa) and we saw enough from Sharma, Kumar and even Singh to tell that they’ll have more than enough in their bowling and that’s not forgetting the small matter of Zaheer Khan coming back into the fold. While England will surely make a bold bid to become the No.1 test side in the world India are in no way out of this.

It’s good to be back at Glorious Goodwood, where we had what has to be one of the most successful festivals in the history of the Vic Page after jumping on the Hannon and Hughes bandwagon big – style. Things won’t be as easy this year of course, but they should still have a number of successes and I wouldn’t put anyone off Hughes to be top jockey at the meeting, with his chances obvious for all to see. Given that it’s a week-long bet and we’re in the position to do so, we’ll start by backing Hughes to be top jockey.

The opening handicap (2.00) looks as fierce as ever so it’s only that I fancy Modun so strongly that I’m going to put him up. He overcame every obstacle presented to him on debut when slow away and green (also set plenty to do) on Folkestone debut and he was unlucky to be caught in the last strides on his handicap debut at Kempton. He returned in typical Stoute fashion when an easy winner of a decent 10f Newbury handicap on reappearance.

He got smashed 15lbs for that win but was so deeply impressive it might have been fair game & sent off a 100/30 favourite (one of the hottest of the week at Royal Ascot) for the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap, he ran keen early on but was never going to handle the soft ground and proved that all wrong when running a fine race to come second only to Green Destiny, who was clearly let loose with a claimer on board and is a group winner in waiting. The hope would be that this colt is too – Having been raised only 2lbs for his York run - and even at a short price of 7/2 he can make a bold bid to get our meeting off to a flyer.

Top Three horses carrying top weight have won this in the last five years which automatically makes Kings Gambit a name worthy of respect, given that he has his preferred partner on board, while Constant Contact is the real “value” in the field, as the on – fire Ben Linfoot has already explained. I could see the argument for Forte Del Marmi but he’s drawn far too wide to envisage, while a heavy rise takes me off All Action although his stable are in flying form (7 from the last 15 runners have won).

At Galway, nothing makes stand – out appeal apart from Mahaazen in the 7.15 (has made this race his own in recent years, winning four of the last five runnings) but she goes in a maiden with any number of improvers and may not have things “all to herself”.

Advice

2 pts Richard Hughes to be Glorious Goodwood top jockey (15/8 Boylesports)

1 pt win Modun, 2.00 Goodwood (7/2 Coral)
