Royal Ascot 2013 - Queen Mary Stakes and Sandringham Handicap

Royal Ascot can be a brutal meeting at times and it was for us yesterday, but there’s 24 races left to go and plenty of potential value still to come over the four days, so no time to be giving up yet

The Queen Mary Stakes (5.00), with 24 runners over a five-furlong course, which has favoured the near side this week, is hardly a punters benefit, but it’s fair to say that plenty will be pretty happy if Rizzena can take the spoils. While she should take some catching, it’s interesting to note that her Newmarket conqueror Fire Blaze is 14/1, despite having held on well to justify favouritism that day in one of the season’s stronger maidens, with 10 wins from 9 different horses in that race since. There is the problem of her being in stall 2 – not the place to be this week – and the fact that she was certainly more ready than Rizzena and others on her debut but the bare form she holds entitles her to be a lot shorter than 14/1 and she may have been overlooked too soon by many.

John Gosden’s exploits with fillies won him the trainers title last year and in the closing Brittania, his Woodland Aria (left) looks to have a strong chance. A smooth winner of her debut over 9f on the all weather at Wolves, she travelled the best of anything in the Musidora Stakes but failed to stay the trip fully, hinting that a strongly run mile would be sure to being the best out of her, and the impression she gave when landing a decent conditions stakes at Leicester latest supplemented that theory.  With the second and third rated 89 and 100 respectively, the form looks fair for her level and she can go well today.

In the same race, Dermot Weld’s Bracing Breeze can go well and it also worth supporting. A stylish winner of a Dundalk maiden on the AW last year, her second in a Cork condtions race over 6 furlongs was a promising reappearance which was makde to look all the better by the winner going onto land a Listed event and if coming on for that run as she shaped she would, has a lot more to offer here.

Advice

1 pt each/way Fire Blaze (14/1 Bet365)

1 pt each/way Bracing Breeze (7/1 Bet365)

1 pt each/way Woodland Aria (9/1 Bet365*, 10/1 Stan James)

*Bet365 are going 4 places in the Queen Mary and 5 in the Sandringham, and deserve credit for offering such terms in these circumstances; More boookmakers should do the same
