2.40 Epsom
Investec Coronation Cup (Group 1) (Class 1) (4YO plus)
Winner £198,485
Chamonix: Made up into a smart type in short time last year,
winning heavy ground contests in fine style from the front at Galway and
Listowel before running below form at Curragh in October; This his first start
since, but used as a pacemaker.
Chapter Seven: Solid, progressive handicapper who’s been
improving steadily, sixth in Lincolin and then third in Spring Cup; Takes a
break from those duties to provide a good gallop for Dunaden today.
Dunaden: Now an established Globetrotter, only sixth in last
year’s King George but then a winner of Cuafield Cup off top weight and
consistently better in Group 1’s around the world since, including when third
in the Ganay recently; Should enjoy 1m4f but no match for St Nicolas Abbey in
Sheema Classic and expect the same story today.
Joshua Tree: Took Canadian International for the second time
last autumn after fine ride and easy rope from rivals, but exposed at Sha
Tin afterwards and poor on return; Has
hopes for third at best and that if on his game.
St Nicholas Abbey: Now established as one of world’s best
1m4f horses, especially going left handed, and won this race for last two years,
far more impressive than in last year’s renewal then when beating Midday in
2011; Arguably a career best when winning Sheema Classic and beating Japan Cup
winner Gentildonna in style at Meydan latest, and defeat would be disappointing
on that basis.
VERDICT: With Chamonix and Chapter Seven here as pacemakers,
this is essentially a well run three runner race, with Dunaden and ST NICHOLAS
ABBEY clear on ratings from Joshua Tree and Aidan O’Brien’s charge has an excellent chance to
become the first horse to win this three times if anywhere close to his best.
