European Focus - 16th September 2012

Newly-promoted Torino have collected four points and not conceded a goal in their opening two Serie A matches but face their first real acid test when Inter visit and may suffer their first defeat of the season against Andrea Stramacconi’s men.

Milito esulta dopo il goal in Pescara-InterSixth last season, a new influx of summer signings has seen a wave of optimism about the Neazzuri’s chances this year and an impressive 3-0 win against Pescara seemed to be a good sign of things to come.  A stuttering period just before the international break has seen the mood change however, but there are good reasons to ignore the draw with Vailsilui and last week’s defeat against Roma. For one, playing 60 minutes in midweek with 10 men may well have had a draining effect on those who doubled up, while the keenness to supply Alvairo Peira with the ball meant that Inter exclusively targeted the left flank, which left Federico Balzareitti with the freedom of the park down the opposite side in their 3-1 defeat. If it needed saying already, Roma are one of the better teams in the division and while Torino are no pushovers, they should pose significantly less of a threat.

Their 3-0 win against Pescara was convincing but Inter beat them by the same scoreline in Pescara’s backyard and possess the attacking quality to win a lot more games this season than last. Antionio Cassano, Diego Miltio and Wesley Snejdier have already linked up well this year and were unstoppable at times during the 3-0 win at the beginning of the season. Their impressive performances away from home thus far this term - three games, three wins, three clean sheets – is also very encouraging, and while their San Siro form need to improve if they’re to be making a serious title challenge (which they’re well capable of doing), they can take a second win on the road tonight.

Advice
