3.40 York
Darley Yorkshire Oaks (British Champions' Series) (Fillies'
Group 1) (Class 1) (3YO plus)
Winner £175,801
Advice: 1 pt Blue Bunting (3/1 Hills)
Brushing: Sprung surprise when winning 1m4f Listed event
here in August but not matched that form stepped up in class afterwards into
Group 2 company; Not found best form since and this too hard.
Crystal Capella: A Group 1 filly in all but name, with 7
wins from & 12 proved as good as ever when slamming her field in Group 2 at
Newmarket over 1m4f; Only fourth in
Nassau Stakes but this step up in trip promises to see her in better light and
must be considered a major player.
Vita Nova: Progressive and created deep impression when
making a mockery of 87 in well contested Newmarket handicap on seasonal
reappearance, and confirmed that when going down to similarly progressive type
in strong event; Should have won Lancashire Oaks but for tack slipping and
holds big chance for stable that could have sent last year’s winner Midday.
Banimpire: One of most improved fillies this season, landing
no less than 5 Group races including Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot, and was
desperately unlucky to get chinned by 1,000 Guineas winner Blue Bunting in
Irish Oaks; Royal Whip Stakes win just another on the board and should run a
game race although no reason for form to be reversed suddenly.
Blue Bunting: Huge effort for a filly with her breeding to win
1,000 Guineas on seasonal debut and strong fancy for Oaks off the back of that,
but chance compromised by slowly run race (poor ride); Amends made when just
getting up in Irish equivalent; Should make a bold bid.
Laughing Lashes: Refound progressive 2yo form when third (staying
on powerfully) in the Irish Guineas and same story in the Irish Oaks when rider
dropped whip; Closely matched with the best of the 3yos from that race and
interesting contender here.
Rumh: Unflattering form as a 2yo but excuses for those
defeats (too raw and green on first two runs) and minor revelation since then,
bolting up in Listed race latest (form reads very well for level); Not found
same form since though and passed over.
Wonder Of Wonders: Regally bred andbuilt on deep impression
created only start at 2 when cruising home in Tipperary maiden (got no run only
start in-between) and a most taking winner of Cheshire Oaks when given lot of
ground to make up; Efforts in both Oaks when just beaten by less than a length
on both occasions but beaten fair and square on both occasions.
VERDICT: A top class renewal. The withdrawal of Snow Fairy
is a shame but gives the vote to BLUE BUNTING, who has proven so gutsy in
landing the 1,000 Guineas and Irish Oaks this year. Next best is likely to be
Crystal Capella, who should like the step up in distance, and then Vita Nova
although the exceptionally tough Banimpire deserves a mention
