Great Voltigeur Stakes 2011 - Ebor Festival 2011 (Day 1)

3.05 York
sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1)  (3YO only)
Winner £89,872

Pick: Sea Moon (win)

Owner detailsAl Kazeem: Never in danger when running pout a ready winner of a competitive handicap at Newbury and probably has more to come, but the step up in trip/class, and change in ground all ask big questions of him; Others preferred.

Owner detailsGenius Beast: Built on already solid two year old form when a clear cut and decisive winner of the Bet 365 Classic Trial at Sandown, taking advantage of whole field dispersing across the track; Better form when third in the Hocquart but well held in the Hardwicke Stakes and second string of Godolphin.

Owner detailsHunter’s Light: Created Group class impression when slamming Dee Stakes 2nd in maiden at Newmarket & made quick amends for Royal Ascot disappointment (behind Slumber) when toughing it out having made smooth headway at Hamilton latest; Staying on third in the Voltigeur makes him interesting, but the winner reposes on better terms.

Owner detailsNamiban: Has held himself highly in good races this season, and claimed big double when landing Gordon Stakes under a penalty at Goodwood latest; Should run another bold race again.

Owner detailsRegent Street: Has more than his fair share of talent, as shown when pacemaking for stablemate Recital, but well held in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and presumably a pacemaker again here for stablemate Seville.

Owner detailsSea Moon: Cemented a high reputation earned last winter with deeply impressive handicap win under topweight on reappearance here, coming from some way back (hard to do on this course) and looking as if he’d only improve for the step up in trip.

Owner detailsSeville: Only disappointed once in career and holds a winning chance based on his two Group 1 second this season, the form of which has been boosted majorly lately; Should run another big race but worry about his tendency to find one too good at his price; One to beat though.

Owner detailsThimaar: Got off the mark with an easy win over a subsequent scorer, having bumped into useful types the last thrice before that (looked improved for step up to this trip); Seems safely held by A Kazeem on earlier form though.

VERDICT: Seville is the one to beat but has found one too good 3 times now this season and is short at odds against, albeit a well deserved odds against. While it would be nice to see him win, SEA MOON has already shown a lot in just three starts and has tremendous scope to improve for the step up to 12 furlongs. Nambian is a solid choice who seemingly has no flaws.
