2.30 York
Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2)
(Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner £82,880
Advice: 0.5 pt each/way Reply (13/2 Bet365)
Lilbourne Lad: Impressive in two Irish wins, when running
out wide margin winner of Listed race before then grinding out Group 2 win and
creditable fourth in Phoenix Stake probably the best form in the field; Should
go well, but weight an issue (has to give weight all round).
B Fifty Two: Got the better of Lilbourne Lad at Newmarket
when getting weight but unable to really progress form that form in same style that
latter named has; Group 3 second was creditable but this too tough.
Burwaaz: Looked sure fire winner when beating all but
subsequent winner Eureka on his debut, having pulled all the way; Didn’t need
to do much more when winning at Leicester but Norfolk run was hugely
eye-catching, coming late on in isolation on the far side; Good seconds since
but suspicion that he is best at the minimum trip.
Caspar Netscher: Has developed into a very smart early season two year old,
placing in three good Listed events including Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal
Ascot; Unlucky Richmond third will see him in the thick of things here and
should go well.
Diamondhead: Still very green (carried second across the
track when winning maiden at Newmarket) and respected despite step up in class;
Needs to have come on a fair bit for that run.
Justineo: Well liked, and unlucky to bump into Listed
winners/placed horses on first two starts before breaking maiden impressively
last time; Runner up since disappointed but yard’s record in this contest means
he should be respected.
Reply: £500,000 yearling who was too raw for the occasion
when third in very smart conditions event but different horse although when
thrashing his field (including subsequent Listed winner), never seeing another
rival from the front; Only fifth in the Phoenix Stakes but gets a handy weight
turnaround with Lilbourne Lad from that and can take a hand here if deadening
ground doesn’t stop his chances too much.
Sardanaplus: Performed wonders to win on debut considering
tardy start (bumped) before travelling like a good horse at Hamilton; Stable
have had much juvenile success and should go well here.
Wise Venture: Looked a horse to follow when winning his
first two starts (form has worked out for both) but bitter disappointment in
Listed race at Newbury since; Wouldn’t want to rule out a return to form but
others appeal more.
VERDICT: It could be worth giving REPLY another go. He disappointed
a little in fifth but was beaten by good horses that day, including Lilbourne
Lad who now has to give him weight, and while this is still a good race, he’s
worth a chance. Burwaaz and Caspar Netcher should go well but I couldn’t fail
to be more impressed by Sardanaplus’s debut win.
