July Festival 2012 - Princess Of Wales's Goldsmiths Stakes 2012

3.00 Newmarket
Princess Of Wales's Goldsmiths Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1)  (3YO plus)
Winner £61,899

Advice: No bet at current time of writing (9.13 Wednesday) although Jakkalberry would have to be given a serious chance on  ground described as “Good” and Red Cadeaux could be value in running given his racing style.

Owner detailsRed Cadeux: Ended fantastic progress throughought last season with close seconds to Dunaden in Melbourne Cup and Hong Kong Vase; Good return when unable to give weight and a beating to Gold Cup winner Colour Vision and since won Yorkshire Cup while second in Coronation Cup and then third in Hardwicke (ahead of Jakkalkberry; now 3lbs worse off); Big chance here once again with the hill sure to be to his advantage.

Owner detailsDandino: Won the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket for James Given in May and then moved to Nicky Henderson yard and back to Fanshawe when not taking to schooling over hurdles; Fair comeback (especially on literal second to Sea Moon on that one’s seasonal debut) but not quite best for this season, disappointing when not able to move past Polygon in Fred Archer over C&D; Talented but others have more persuasive claims.

Owner detailsFiorente: Had looked set for a promising season after hugely promising 3yo carrer which saw seconds to Nathaniel and Nambian in Group company; Proven to be disappointment so fae this season though and well beaten in the Hardwicke, so others make more appeal despite better stable form of late (double with last two runners).

Owner detailsHarris Tweed: Game front runner who came back in style when running out a ready winner of the in the John Deere at Newbury, and then a good second in the Yorkshire Cup behind Red Cadeux; Weighted to reverse that form today so has to be given as big a chance as ever.

Owner detailsJakkalberry; Much improved since the switch to Marco Botti, following second to Opinion Poll and Fox Hunt when third (and staying on in eye-catching fashion) in Sheema Classic; First start back for a while when fifth in Hardwicke but could come on for that and 3lbs better off with Red Cadeux for that, so has to be given a chance.

Owner detailsJoshua Tree: Consistent stayer for yard which also run Jakkalberry in this; Fourth placed finishes the last twice in Longchamp Group 2 (2 miles) and soft ground Italian Group 1 seem to suggest that he needs a longer trip and others look quicker.

Owner detailsModun: Highly competitive in handicaps last year for Michael Stoute yard after winning at Newbury and Group 3 win at backend of last year well deserved; Disappointment in Melbourne Cup forgiven easily but one paced on March comeback in 1m6f Group event; Far more needed today.

Owner detailsQuest For Peace: Promising start for yard when winning Group 3 at Ascot over this trip but not landed a blow on any start since despite second in Jockey Club Stakes two starts back and others from same races make much more appeal.

Owner detailsSea Of Heartbreak: Group 2 win, gained with smooth run from behind to nail three closely matched rivals on the line, would give her big chance although she’s not repeated that since; Her best form entitles her to respect and better than her last placed finish at York suggests but others preffered.

VERDICT: A competitive renewal which offers a good chance for Red Cadeux to get yet another win on the board. He has to give away 3lbs to the others thanks to his Yorkshire Cup wins, which makes him vulnerable to Harris Tweed (who is the standout at the weights, won’t mind the ground, and is sure to take some pegging back on the face of it, but he was striding away confidently at the end and should make a bold bid. Given the nature of his runs this season – he made all the ground late in the Hardwicke and the Coronation Cup – he’s one to look for in running. JAKKALBERRY was nearly 5 lengths behind Red Cadeaux at Ascot but he too gets a pull and that was his first effort since March. If the ground dries enough for him, he’s got to have a massive chance. Of the others, Fiorente – from a yard in form that has trained 4 of the last 7 winners – makes most appeal.
