Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (201st Running) (British Champions
Series) (Fillies' Group 1) (Class 1)
(3YO only)
Winner £246,618 - 17 run
Advice: 1 pt each/way Bracelet (12/1 Bet365* )
Betimes: Speed in the family everywhere you look; Second
favourite and always travelling well when trashing fair sorts in Lingfield
maiden in December, her only start; Race has worked out OK for the level and
fact that trainer sees fit to send her here a major positive.
Bracelet: Highly rated enough to pitch her in listed company
(finished well behind Sandiva that day) first time out and much the better for
it when easily landing Leopardstown maiden as betting suggested she would; 7/1,
behind early, and lot to do entering the straight but strode out impressively
to land 1,000 Guineas trail at Leopardstown on softest ground she’s ever faced,
never better than at the finish; This extra furlong should suit massively and
so could better ground; Big player today.
Euro Charline: Looked a potential group horse in the making
when impressing over 7f on the AW at Wolverhampton in maiden and handicap and
very promising turf debut when second in the Nell Gwyn, snatched at the wrong
time in her run and unlucky not to catch Sandiva; Extra furlong today something
she should relish and surprising if she’s not better than we’ve seen.
Ihtimal: Built on the form of her 2 group wins last year
with impressive wins in UAE 1,000 Guineas and Oaks (looked especially good over
1m1f); Drop back to 1m expected to be no problem and can get close to Rizzena
than she did in the Fillies mile when coming too late; On the premises at
least.
Joyeuse: Known as the half sister to Frankel but become a
good horse in her own right and one of most promising shows yet when coming
from last to hird in the Fred Darling at Newbury (7f) on reappearance, settling
properly for the first time in hood; 1m obviously going to suit far better
today and strong likely gallop a great positive too; Needs more on bare form
basis but foolish to discount.
Lady Lara: Beaten by many a rival in a group even last year
but off the mark at last time of asking and didn’t wilt when passed in the Fred
Darling, although no reason to reverse form with third Joyeuse; Others look to
have more to give today.
Lamar: Behind four of today’s rivals on separate occasions
and well beaten at that last year; Might be a tad better than her latest fourth
in Nell Gwyn suggests having suffered some trouble in running but surprise if
she can reverse form with the front two from that race.
Lighting Thunder: Looked a promising horse when landing pair
of 6f contests at Newbury and Doncaster and lost nothing when colours lowered
by Miss France in Oh So Sharp Stakes although margin flatters her, and well
held in Rockfel Stakes; Hard to see her landing a significant blow today.
Lucky Kristale: Disappointing when only sixth in Albany
Stakes but that evidently not her real form based on impressive group wins the
next twice, beating Rizzena in very impressive style (overcame poor run
through_ when receiving weight on July Course and then running out a ready
winner of the Lowther Stakes; Slightly disconcerting that the last time she was
seen but shaped then as if she’d have no problem going further and big player
today.
Majeyda: Couldn’t live with turn of foot from stablemate Ithimal
at Doncaster in May Hill and made amends for disappointment at Longchamp with
clear cut win here in November; Return in Nell Gwyn was promising and can be
expected to improve but surprise if she improved past first two ahead of her
that day.
Manderley: Best effort when second in sales race on final
2yo start but well behind Joyeuse in Fred Darling on return and surprise if she
can reverse that form although family does seem to get better with age; Much
more needed still.
Miss France: Found things happening too fast on debut but
impressive when beating Marcel Boussac winner next time out and then a smooth
winner of Oh So Sharp Stakes on reappearance, never overly extended to beat
Lighting Thunder; Reappearance disappointing but couldn’t get cover early and
ruined chances by failing to settle in steadily run race that suited likes of
Vorda (second) far more; Much better expected today.
Princess Noor: Impressive performance when second to Vorda
latest, racing alone for most of the race and only just being cut down in the
final strides; That an improvement on well beaten efforts beforehand but the
question now this extra trip and others may have more improvement in there.
Rizzena: Just about the leading 2yo filly last year,
impressive winner at Royal Ascot early before outsped by Lucky Kristale (gave
penalty) here and then coming too late behind No Nay Never in Prix Morny; Best
effort when beating Kiyoshi and Tapestry in Moyglare Stud Stakes with sharp
turn of foot and while beaten by the ill fated Chriselliam in fillies mile,
ahead of Ithimal; Stamina no issues, best form in the race and bold showing
expected although worry that others (like Tapestry) can improve past her.
Sandiva: One of the leading 2 year olds, best of the rest in
Alabany Stakes and an impressive winner at Deauville; Didn’t handle soft ground
in Marcel Boussac, and worthy winner of Nell Gwyn latest, although particularly
well time challenge from Dettori onboard may have been instrumental in helping
her hold off the promising Euro Charline; Respected.
Tapestry: Smart turn of foot to land Curragh maiden and then
the Debutante Stakes before being beaten by Rizzena in the Moyglare Stud;
Didn’t look unlucky (interfered with by Kiyoshi so third was changed to
second); Potentially more to come and maybe this trip likely to suit her more
(bred to) so amongst the leading players today.
Vorda: Ahead of Rizzena when second in Morny and then a cosy
winner over Princess Noor in the Cheveley Park here; Forget Breeders’ Cup run
but she seemed happier over the shorter trip than many she meets again today;
Way she was worn down close him at Masions-Laffite when messy race suited her
far more than Miss France; If staying, huge player.
VERDICT: A wide-open renewal where any one of 10 could be
called a realistic contender and hopefully an exciting race in store with
potential improvers and established horses clashing, while the stamina question
puts particular importance upon the pace. Frustratingly, the field of 14 for
the 2,000 Guineas decided to split yesterday although there was no major advantage
for either side and the draw is not factored into out selections. Ante post
selection Rizzena has the best form in the book and the beating of nearly all
the major contenders on her best form from last season, so is a worthy
favourite with her stamina confirmed, but one must wonder if she has hit her
peak already and there are a host of lightly raced contenders hoping to pounce.
Miss France should enjoy today’s test more than the farce that the Imprudence
turned into when Vorda was second, while Tapestry can improve on her just
fourth start upped in trip, and rated a major player, but BRACELET’S reappearance
win was a deeply promising effort given the circumstances and while she may
want yet further, this extra furlong should see better from her and she’s taken
to build again on her massive potential. Lucky Kristale will take high rank if
staying a mile and Euro Charline and Joyeuse should be better horses at this
trip; It is hard to be so sure about Vorda.
