York’s Dante meeting has it’s highlight today when True
Story looks to cement his Derby spot in the Group 2 highlight, and outside of
that the meeting offers plenty of betting opportunity as well on a well
balanced card with something for everyone.
The talk over the weekend was over how soft the ground would
be – and the victory of Maarek under a penalty for the Duke of York would lend
a lot of credence to that theory – but yesterday was a dry day and with a dry
night, things shouldn’t ride too testing this afternoon, a major positive for
his – and most of the field’s chances. Infact, with nothing but sun so far in
the leadup to the race, today’s ground should hopefully be riding closer to
good than otherwise.
In the opener, Ashpan Sam would probably like it softer than
most, having won three times on soft ground last season, but good ground was no
problem to him when he hacked up at Thrisk last summer and he still looks to have
potential based on his reappearance at Newmarket, running well for a long way
in a valuable Newmarket handicap, cropping away having forced the pace from the
beginning before fading into seventh late. With that under his belt, and
dropped back to 5 furlongs today, he can take a closer hand in this and
continue his progress again for John Spearing with Ryan Moore once again on
board.
The warm weather may have come just at the right time for
Desert Law (seen left for Andrew Balding), a far less notable Godlolphin ride for Kieren Fallon but one that
looks potentially useful given his very useful efforts in some exalted company
at Meydan (the two horses he finished second too off a mark off 100 have both been
placed in Group 1 company), efforts that suggest he was capturing his best form
that made him so useful for Andrew Balding in 2012. He looks worth chancing
today on those efforts.
Advice
1 pt each/way Ashpan Sam, 1.45 York (8/1 general)
1 pt each/way Desert Law, 1.45 York (16/1 Bet365, general)
