2.00 Leopardstown
Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle (grade 1) (Class
1) (4YO plus)
Winner €52,000
Advice: 1 pt win Waaheb (3/1 general)
Bright New Dawn: Unable to show the significant promise of
his two bumper runs in good company on first hurling start but showed he’s a
horse of some talent when handing out ready winning to yesterday’s impressive
maiden winner Ned Buntline at Fairyhouse; Not to be dismissed even if runner up
probably not at best and interesting.
Rory O’Moore: Game and quite talented front runner who is
ever dangerous when granted an easy lead, although doubt that’ll be the case
here and reeled in with real ease at Punchestown in much lesser race latest;
Others preferred.
Run With The Wind: as useful, with three wins over hurdles (minor
event at Ballinrobe in May and novices at Killarney and Listowel) but more
exposed than most as Cheltenham Grade 2 fifth showed.
Waaheb: Top class bumper horse in the season of 2011/12,
winning first three starts on the bridle before being nosed out of tight finish
to Grade 1 event at Punchestown Festival; Several niggling problems mean we
have seen his only once, but hurdling was excellent and turn of foot impressive
when winning admittedly poor conditions hurdle by 6 and half lengths on the
bridle; Big chance here.
Ally Cascade: Very closely matched with Jezki, having come a
half-length second to him on their hurdling debut (was actually quickest of the
four away from the flight, but worn down late); Since won easily since but hard
to see him reversing form.
Blacklough: Superb attitude for one so young when winning
first two starts, especially when getting himself out of trouble despite poor
jumping when winning on debut at Fairyhouse; Well beaten by Pont Angevine at
Gorwan and others make more appeal.
Jezki: Horse of major potential in bumpers last season (2-3,
only defeat at Cheltenham) and most impressive over hurdles in going 3-3 so
far, winning Royal Bond with smart turn of foot form last season’s Champion Bumper
horse Champagne Fever despite some slack jumping at times; The one to beat in
no uncertain terms and should go well.
Sizing Rio: Impressive point winner, but disappointed on
first start for Henry De Bromhead at Punchestown; Proved that to be all wrong
when hacking up on his hurdling debut, beating subsequent winner Cops And
Robbers by 18 lengths and posting faster time than Waaheb on same card; Less
impressive in Naas Grade 3 but showed very desirable attitude to win there and
well beaten third then second in strong handicap; Chance.
Wingtips: Talented, but one still gets the feeling that he
ran above himself when fifth and third in major juvenile hurdles at Cheltenham/Punchestown
festivals (flashed tail on both occasions); Since finally broke maiden but that
in dreadful race, and others make more appeal here.
VERDICT: An extremely exciting renewal for which Jezki, an
impressive winner of the Royal Bond, is a strong and worthy favourite. Jessica
Harrington’s charge should take some catching but WAAHEB was just as promising
in his bumper days and looked none the worse for an absence of a whole season
when bolting up in admittedly poor company on his return at Punchestown. He can
get the better of the favourite (although the 6/4 on him winning without the favourite and the 11/10 on him making the top 2 are also very solid , Sizing Rio and Bright New Dawn.
