Football - 22nd December 2012

Jan Vertonghen scores
Dembele, Vertonghen, and Lennon are all matchwinners for Spurs

There ever crucial Christmas period starts in earnest today and Tottenham can continue their charge for the top 4 with a victory over inform Stoke. Andre Villas Boas’s side had a very sticky start to the season as the players struggled to adjust to his style of management, but blistering pace out wide and control in the middle has seen them establish themselves as arguably the strongest Top 4 contenders around. A late defeat at Goodison Park apart – where they were the better team from start to finish – Tottenham haven’t been beaten since their 5-2 loss to Arsenal and would be clear of the chasing pack for the top 4 had it not been for late goals at City and Everton (two of the strongest home sides in the League).

Stoke will be no easy task - they've only won once in nine attempts on the road this term but were only beaten three times, two of those coming at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford – but the forward pace of Spurs is well in that calibre and they can kickstart their holiday season with a one goal success.

Over in Spain, Champions Real Madrid have already lost their crown (they are 11 points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid) and they could find themselves slipping much further down the pecking order after a trip to Malaga. The hosts record against Spain’s big two is appalling but Madrid have won just the 4 away games this season and have just 13 points on the road. With Malaga just the 5 points behind Madrid, the +1 Asian handicap – with Madrid needing to win by 2 or more for the bet to lose - makes huge appeal  considering that in the three away games they’ve won, only two have been by two goals or more. Malaga are also a  general 13/2 to win by a goal,  which deserves serious attention for those wanting to risk the win.

Advice

1 pt Tottenham to win by one goal (27/10 Ladbrokes)

1 pt Malaga +1 Asian H’cap (7/10 Bet Victor)
