Williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase 2011

2.40 Kempton
Williamhill.com Desert Orchid Chase (Class 1)  (4YO plus)
Winner £25,628

Advice: 2 pts win Finian’s Rainbow (4/6 VC Bet)

Owner detailsOiseau De Nuit: Decisive winner of Grand Annual Chase last season  and held his held high afterwards; Promising return when third in Haldon Gold Cup but not really gone on (albeit non stayer in Paddy Power Gold Cup) and looks held in this company.

Owner detailsWishfull Thinking: Top novice chaser last season who gained quite a following with his front running exploits, bolting up in handicap chase here before brave second at the Festival; Followed that up with bold front running performances at Aintree/Punchestown; Attempt to do same in Paddy Power Gold Cup didn’t quite work out but really disappointing in Tingle Creek when ridden overaggressively and now major questions to answer.

Owner detailsFinian’s Rainbow: Promising, if not sometimes too enthusiastic for his own good over hurdles but really came to the fore as a novice chaser last season, winning four out of his 5 races (including the Maghull), meeting with defeat only in the Arkle (where he was outstayed by winner having gone on quite soon from home); Withdrawn from Tingle Creek after poor scope but rested since and should go well.

Owner detailsTakeroc: Has struck up a real rapport with Harry Derham, winning well at Aintree before bouncing back from Ascot disappointment (when taken out too soon) when running well twice since; This race should be too good for him but not without hope of placing.

Owner detailsKinkeel: Token runner.

Owner detailsOumeyade: Beaten 13 lengths in selling hurdle last time out.

VERDICT: FINIAN’S RAINBOW makes his much awaited seasonal debut here after missing the Tingle Creek with temperature, but he may be good enough to win on his seasonal debut. Nicky Henderson’s charge has a three from 3 record after a break and sets a high standard on his Arkle second and Maghull Chase win, with Wishfull Thinking having proven disappointing this season.
