2.45 Leopardstown
Dr. P.J. Moriarty Novice Chase (Grade 1) (Class 1) (5YO plus)
Winner €48,750
Advice: 2 pts win Don Cossack (11/8 general)
Ballycasey: Lightly raced and highly rated last season,
although he was disappointing at Punchestown when tried in graded company for
first time; Back on track when making impressive debut over fences when coming well clear of useful rivals over 2m1f at Navan, raising serious hopes for him over preferred middle distance.
Carlingford Lough: Galway Plate winner who has graduated to
higher class novice ranks, as shown when second to favourite Don Cossack in
Drinmore Chase before then coming hardest and latest to win 3m Grade 1 over
Christmas in comprehensive style; Has to reverse that form today.
Don Cossack: Always been a horse of huge potential and
started to fulfil it over fences, following impressive debut with runner up in
Grade 2 to Morning Assembly when possibly outsped on good ground but then a
convincing winner of Drinmore Chase from Carlingford Lough; Should take the
beating.
VERDICT: No letup on quality but a shame to see such a small
field. The testing surface can see DON COSSACK, who probably has the strongest
form, home ahead of Carlingford Lough again while Ballycasey is obviously still
a horse of huge potential who should make his presence felt.
