Today's Pointers - Ascot & Champion Hurdle 19th Feb

No messing around in today’s pointers. SILVINIACO CONTI has been advised to win the Kingwell Hurdle (3.45, Wincanton) and his price of 33/1 looks very big for the Champion given that he’d have feasibly been only a length behind Menorah off level weight in the International Hurdle and if he beats 2 very good horses today that price could easily crash.

Now onto all of the races that didn’t get a horse by horse view at a superb Ascot card. In the opening Espirito Santo Investment Bank Novices' Hurdle (1.20) Tornado Bob has assumed favouritism this morning and he’s a worthy market leader but this is a much harder test than his last two with the unbeaten Nicky Henderson Hurdle Problema Tic and Paul Nicholl’s SONOFOVIC, who created a deep impression when fairly slamming subsequent winner & Grade 2 third Teaforthree with ease, and getting 3lbs from the market leaders he can go well here.

In the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Chase (2.25) BREEDZBREEZE is given another chance off top weight to make amends of a respectable run when third in a similar race last tiem over 2m5f. A first fence mistake which nearly took him down took out his chances and he caught a tartar in Tatenen, who romped home by 16 lengths. He did well to get as close as he did and is worth one more chance. Given that he’s fancied by so many, Iconlast is a big price at 10’s, although Ogee is the biggest foreseen threat, not forgetting that Royal Tune is the one to beat.

In the Betfair Mobile Handicap Hurdle (3.35) Lough Derg is arguably the one to beat down in class from last time (especially if Tom Scudamore times him front running burst right) but the value has gone from him at 5’s, especially from an each/way point of view. Like Minded ran a cracker considering his long absence in the Lanzarote but I’m worried he could bounce so preference is for SHALONE, who went really well behind Lough Derg before fitness told, has been dropped 2lbs and now goes in a race which is just that little bit easier with the winner, second, and sixth all not reopposing him.

The Trisoft 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle (4.05) produced the Supreme Novices Hurdle winner last year in Menorah and SPRINTER SCARE holds similar claims, having not been pushed out to beat a useful enough field at Ffos Las by 10 lengths on the bridle. He might face a toughest test giving 14lbs to Polkisky and the generously priced L’Eminence Grise but he should do so and William Hil’’s 4/9 isn’t the worst price you’ll see. I noticed that DI KAPRIO won a valuable Doncaster Bumper last year and was all but carried off the course when making a hurdling debut last month. He was pulled up after the fifth but quotes of 33’s look big on his bumper form and he’s worth a flyer especially if one of the top three disappoint.

Last but not least, Persian Snow is seen by many as a banker in the bumper although it’s likely that Mono Man will give him a lot to do based on his demolition job first time out.

I don’t fancy anything in the Grand National Trial at Haydock strongly but it’s noticeablethat LE BEAU BAI has a 10lbs pull with West End Rock from their last meeting and he’s also 11lbs lower than when third in this last year. If you asked me which horses I’d take for the National itself, it would have to be Carruthers and West End Rocker although the value’s gone from their prices.
