Matalan Stakes 2010

2.00 Newbury
Matalan Stakes (Registered As The Washington Singer Stakes) (Listed) (Str) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner £13,341

Pick: Zaidan (win)

Zaidan: Shaped as though he'd improve for the run when winning over five furlongs at Doncaster and did so majorly when fairly bolting up in Chesham Stakes last time at Royal Ascot, looking cut above listed level; Has to go close even under penalty.

Janood: Looked like horse with a future when not fully extended to get up in winning 6f maiden at Newmarket 15 days ago by neck from stablemate Busker; Runner up beaten at odds on at Wolves and form looks weak, so more needed although will surely improve.

Native Khan: Very highly regarded 180,000 gns colt & RP Trophy entry who was impressive when quickening clear to win 7f maiden at July Meeting; Seems set for better things according to trainer and must be taken seriously.

Sensei: Very nice start when taking 6-runner maiden at Musselburgh from Coventry eighth Mullins Way wandering but wearing down runner-up inside final 1f; Useful form and RICHARD Huhges is a plus but needs more in tough looking spot.

Silm Shadey: Finally off mark when rallying to edge out Straight Line in minor event at Ascot last month, but had earlier been behind Zaidan when sixth in Chesham Stakes there.

VERDICT: Janood and especially Native Khan looks set for bigger things sooner rather than later but ZAIDAN looked much better than listed class when romping with the Chesham Stakes last time and sets a very high standard to shoot at even under a penalty.
