1.20 Leopardstown
Paddy Power Dial-a-bet Chase (grade 1) (Class 1) (5YO plus)
Winner €65,001
Arvika Liegonnnirere: Said to be
better going right handed but that no issue when winning the Grade 1 novice on
this card last year; Disappointing twice after that but a wide margin winner at
Punchestown festival and in rude health on comeback and when burning Rubi Light
for pace in what became at match at Punchestown; Big chance.
Baily Green: As tough as old boots and can be given a big
chance on most form, especially his Arkle second; Beaten by Arvika twice either
side of that and also behind Sizing Europe on their comeback race but can’t be
ruled out if either of those two disappoint with doubts over the pair of them.
Benefficient: Took advantage of Arvika’s fall to scrap out
Grade 1 win in January over c&d and then overturned Dynaste at Cheltenham festival
but pulled up at Punchestown and then limp on comeback, albeit over three miles
at Wetherby; Must step up hugely from that.
Hidden Cyclone: One time extremely promising novice who was
tipped for big things following promising novice hurdling season and successes
on first two novice chases, but proven disappointing since in open company;
Much better this season than last but not sure that he wants drop back to 2
miles.
Kid Cassidy: Enigmatic, but seriously talented when it all
comes together as it nearly did at the Festival last year; Disappointing
afterwards but flew home to make the best of generous weight concession from
Tingle Creek winner Sire De Grugy: Will have targets to aim at with front
runners here and has to be considered in open race although something to be
taken on trust here.
Rubi Light: Burst onto the scene when third in the 2011
Ryanair Chase but not quite fulfilled that promise at the top level since and
beaten a total of 31 lengths behind Arvika the last twice and wants more than
two miles.
Sizing Europe: Been a superb performer on the 2 mile chase
scene, not out of the first 2 since January 2011, winning Champion Chase once
and finishing runner up on two occasions; Has been tried over longer trips many
times and after beating Baily Green, was a disappointment at Down Royal latest
in Champion Chase; This will suit better, and can play a big part despite being
nearly 12.
VERDICT: This is a fascinating contest with question marks
over all the runners. Much has been made of Arvika Leigonnare’s record going
left handed but he’s still a worthy favourite and will take the beating, as
should Sizing Europe despite advancing years. If KID CASSIDY can turn up in the
same shape that saw him win so impressively at Cheltenham on his seasonal debut
the he’s more than capable of making a big impact and he’s given a vote on
value terms in what looks like a watching race. Baily Green may outrun his odds
once again for those who don't like those at the top of the market.
