1.55 Longchamp
Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Group 1) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner €200,235
Advice: 1 pt win Karakontie (7/2 general)
Al Muthana: Close second in Prix
Du Cabourg earlier in the season but then put in place when a well beaten
seventh in the Morny and fifth in another Deavuille Group 3 latest; Hard to
imagine anything more.
Charm Spirit: All over the place on debut at Deauville (slow
at start, placed last, switched and made heavy weather of things to take
second) so second there an achievement in itself and always had things under
control when landing 4 runner race here latest; This a much different test but
can’t deny that he could improve an awful lot still.
Noozhoh Canarias: Trailblazer from Spain who made it a
hat-trick with deeply impressive Listed win in provinces, having blitzed
opposition at La Zazurela over 4 and 6 furlongs; Form didn’t really look that
strong at the time but four since won Listed event in good style and despite
the extra furlong and slower ground, likely to take some catching.
Wilshere Boulevard: Looked as if he’d enjoy 7 furlongs when
he won Anglesey Stakes at Curragh from Saturday’s Sales race winner Oklahoma
City, and gave that impression even more strongly when second in Gimcrack; That
also showed that soft ground no worry to him and go well here.
Another Party: Hard to fancy given how far he was behind
Noozhoh Canarias then they met and the way he was just caught in Deavuille
Group 3 suggests that he’s not one for this longer trip.
Karakontie: Clearly smart on basis of debut win in provinces
on very soft ground and show a good attitude when just being edged out of
Deavuille listed race by Richard Hannon’s Bunker, and impressive in Prix La
Rochette when beating heavily fancied favourite (had previously won debut
impressively); Should take some beating here.
Barley Mow: Got there in the style of a good horse and the
nick of time when landing maiden at Newbury and get the feeling that he didn’t
run as expected/to that form when beaten second in the Flying Scotsman; Said to
have made huge progress since at home and fact he runs here significant in
itself (same connections Bunker’ only horse to have beaten Karakntite) and can
do himself justice today.
Baby Foot: Another in the field to have race freely, winning
at Marsellie and Vichy in good style before narrowly being beaten by subsequent
group 3 winner at Deavuille in August; Still of idea that this is far more
competitive but respected.
VERDICT: A trappy renewal. Nooznhoh Canarias has made the
biggest impression so far and probably the most convicting case, but it remains
to be seen if his speed lasts over the extra furlong in this ground and
KARAONKITE may be the pick of them based on his easy C&D Group 3 win which
promised a big effort at the least today, and his extra stamina can be the
turning factor today. Barley Now makes more appeal than Wilshere Boulevard both
have a bit to prove and Charm Sprit might be the value.
