Pakistan v South Africa - 2nd Test

South Africa’s 15 test unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Pakistan in the UAE and one of the most progressive sides on the circuit should not be outsiders to take the spoils when the two sides meet for the second time from the early hours today.

South Africa are a fearsome unit at their best and came into this with a deserved reputation as the world’s best test team to supplement their number 1 ranking. However they had not played an official test for some 5 months and came into that game with only one warm-up under their belt, which proved more than inadequate as a Pakistan side back on a ground fast becoming their fortress following an embarrassing defeat to Zimbabwe where balance and desire was a huge problem.

Pakistan have won three of their four tests here and didn’t even need 5 days to beat a South Africa side that were caught woefully short on preparedness. With Hashim Amla flying home for the birth of his child and Dale Steyn likely to be absent, Graeme Smith, Alviro Petersen Jacques Kallis, and Faf Du Plesssis will have to raise a better effort than the pitiful 81 runs they scored between them and the lack of spin form in the Proteas – only Robin Peterson is really able to lead the line for them in that regard and he took no wickets last week – compounds the belief that Pakistan, with Saeeed Ajmal and Zulfigar Babar both likely to play a key role once again.
