Greenham Stakes 2012

3.10 Newbury
AON Greenham Stakes (Group 3) (Str) (Class 1)  (3YO only)
Winner £31,190

Advice: 4 pts win Bronterre (8/11 Hills, Power)

Owner detailsBoomerang Bob: Out early as a 2yo, winning only minor event at Kempton before being beaten at Windsor, but then ran two screamers in Norfolk Stakes and Prix Du Bois; Both strong events but over 5 furlongs on good ground so stamina is the worry.

Owner detailsBronterre: Followed cosy debut win with destruction of solid Listed field at Goodwood last time, with Gimcrack second Justineo left for dead (just behind was solid Nayarra) and even better effort when fourth behind Parish Hall in Dewhurst last year; That makes him form pick and with yard in from, tops the shortlist.

Owner detailsCaspar Netscher: One of the stars of last season, winning Gimcrack and Mille Reef Stakes after strong efforts in Listed/Group 3 races; Only fifth and eighth in Middle Park Stakes & Breeders’ Cup respectively but got blocked for a clear run at Newmarket and may have been feeling end of a long season in America; Good chance on form.

Owner detailsRebellious Guest: Impressive in winning twice at Windsor last season but well exposed when he tackled group company, firstly in the Coventry and then in the Middle Park Stakes; Needs to improve.

Owner detailsSpiritual Star: Most impressive maiden win (second start) when romping home over C&D from the front, coming home unchallenged, but swallowed up when the going got serious in the Dewhurst and will need to be better than that here.

VERDICT: A race that has had some lustre taken from it with the absence of once raced pair Top Offer and Tales Of Grimm due to soft ground.  This leaves BRONTERRE as the outstanding choice in the field, with his fourth in the Dewhurst looking like strong form having already been advertised by stablemate Trumpet Major winning the Craven in good style earlier this week. With his stable having won with three of the last 5 runners sent here, he’s taken to continue their good start to the season. Caspar Nescther deserves respect on the best of last season’s form, where 7 furlongs always looked like it would suit.
