It’s surprising that I’ve put up the first blog since Arc
day on Carlisle’s jumps card tomorrow but with many stars or promising, high
class types, returning this weekend – Indeed we have already seen Cheltenham
Festival winners First Lieutenant and Sizing Europe on the course – and there’s
one that interests me a lot.
Strongbows Legend is a popular choice for many in the 2.45,
with Charlie Longsdon’s 6 year old being the least exposed horse in the field,
having placed on three of his four completed starts over fences. It’s true he
should take the beating here, especially with some improved jumping, but I can’t
help that think the value lies in the relative veteran It’s Like That, who
should be suited by a return to 3 miles having gone more than well more most of
the marathon 3m6f at Cartmel – Taking a decent spot at the third last - before
finding his stamina was gone.
A poor run at Stratford ignored, he had more than enough to
spare when winning at Uttoxeter previously and Tony McCoy on board is a big
plus to his chances; He should be around 6/1 and that price is worth taking given
he’ll have plenty of stamina to spare.
The same combination could also be in the winners enclosure at
3.55 with Palace Jester, who shaped very well last season when third behind
Spirit Son (who’s achievements since need no explanations) and subsequent
winner Sivola De Sivola when looking as if he’d improve for fences and cope
well with a trip.
He was a bit disappointing when flattening out tamely at
Bangor and ruining his chances of winning with an early mistake on his last
start, but he should be better now and can hold off a strong field which
includes Time For Spring, who was a dual winning hurdler last season, having
already defied a mark of 120, Flinty Bay, who is yet to run a bad race in 7
starts, and Eighteen Carat, who has a bit of stamina and is likely to get
closer to Mac Aeda and Cloudy Too from their meetings last season.
Advice
1 pt win It’s Like That, 2.45 Carlisle
1 pt win Palace Jester, 3.55 Carlisle
