Chester May Meeting - Chester Vase

2.55 Chester
MBNA Chester Vase (Group 3) (Class 1)  (3YO only)
Winner £28,385

Pick: Nathaniel (win)

Madawi: Fourth in big sales race at Newmarket on second start and also in Group 3 Horris Hill on final outing as juvenile; Cut no ice on return and others preferred here.

Nathaniel:  got closer to Frankel than any other when finishing half a length behind him last year (both on debut); Ridiculous to take that form at face value but nothing wrong with his two runs since, getting chinned by Picture Editor at Doncaster and breaking maiden with ease at Haydock latest; Can do well here.

Sadler’s Risk: Was hugely on top all the way when making all under top weight in handicap on reappearance; Unable to cope with drop in trip but maybe also rise in class when seventh in Sales race last time and unlikely to be good enough.

Slumber: Showed nothing on debut but swept opposition aside when winning Epsom Derby trial on only run since; Some doubts over form of that race but no denying impression he made and with extra two furlongs to suit, can progress again here.

Treasure Beach: Progressed with each start last year and was unlucky not to complete hat-trick in nursery at Listowel; Bettered that form when respectable third in Royal Lodge (well behind winner but hampered badly in straight) and type to do much better at three, so seriously considered for trainer that has won this twice in last four years.

VERDICT: The twice raced Slumber looked like a horse with a future when winning the Epsom Derby Trial last time & Treasure Beach is open to any amount of improvement for the step up in trip, but NATHANIEL, who showed so much promise at two, is preferred. He confirmed his wellbeing with an impeccable win at Haydock and should go onto better things.
