As regular readers will know, we don’t really like big field
handicaps, and we like favourites in big field handicaps even less. So you can
imagine that Tropics, the favourite for this afternoon’s Stewards’ Cup, isn’t at
the forefront of our minds for a punt. And you’d be right to think so, but
there is one horse who has shown enough promise and potential for us to break
our normal rule and get involved with the Stewards’ Cup, which is Rex
Imperator. Tropics of course comes here after winning the Skybet Dash, taking
the spolils by a tightly fought short head, for which he has gotten a 6lbs
penalty in his bid to follow. Why Rex Imperator, who was only a length behind him
that day and is now 9lbs better off, should be double the price of him in
places, is a mystery to us, especially as his Wokingham effort can be marked up
given that he switched left and then right after the start to get the best position.
His second to Tropics came just six days after that but was a career best for
him under William Haggas – who has four wins and four places from 13 runners on
this course since 2003, including the 1-2 in this event in 2005 – who may still
have more to come from this promising gelding. Take the 16/1 with whoever’s
playing 5 places.
Advice
1 pt each/way Rex Imperator (16/1 general)
