3.45 Curragh
Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) (Class 1) (2YO only)
Winner €116,000 - 5 run
Ambiance: Seems to be still progressing based on Molecomb
third, having been sixth in French Group 2 and fourth in Norfolk beforehand,
but all best form seems to be at 5 furlongs and others preferred on that basis.
Big Time: Looked a
good one when taking winners’ race on debut at Naas and change in ground no problem
for him when second in Railway Stakes to Surdiman (supplemented), and no surprise
where he to improve for that once again here on only third start;
Sniper: Lots of promise on debut fourth to Suridman but
absolutely nowhere at Galway next time and can’t fancy he’ll do any better than
that here even if first time blinkers work the oracle.
Surdiman: Things finally dropped for him on third start when
convincing Leopardstown winner and then tenacious in Railway Stakes when
getting the better of Big Time in hard fought finish; To be seen if he can
confirm that form with clear progressive runner up but deserves respect and
clear form chance.
War Command: Everything to like about the way that he nailed
decent Intensifier on debut at Leopardstown, but still couldn’t predict that he
would run out such a dominant, impressive winner of the Coventry Stakes at
Royal Ascot, even if that has proven to be a weaker renewal than once thought;
Still, he won it by 6 lengths on only second start.
VERDICT: This has been a graveyard for Coventry winners but
defeat for WAR COMMAND would be quite dismaying. While that eventually is not
written off, it looked as if he had more to give at Ascot and he won by 6 lengths
there despite hanging across the track. Big Time and Surdiman are the main
threats now Wilshere Boulevard is absent.
