Manchester United face life without Sir Alex Ferguson proper
for the first time when they travel to Wembley for the first time without the
great man for 25 years and their Community Shield Wigan will be more eagerly
awaited than many given the circumstances. On paper the Champions against
relegated Wigan should be a breeze but with United having an extremely testing
start to their season – they play three of the ‘Big 6’ in the first 5 games,
and before even that they must travel to Swansea only next week – and having
played only a tour of Asia and a pre-season friendly against AIK which hasn’t
impressed many, it’ll be fascinating to see the exact shape that United are in.
Wigan can count themselves a little unlucky to have gone
down – there’s a school of thought to suggest that if they hadn’t been in the
FA Cup then they may well have had the resources left to escape – and while
they’ve lost a couple of key players they looked in fine shape when tearing
through Barnsley on the opening day of the Championship for a 4-0 win, sending
out a serious message to any potential promotion rivals along the way. Barnsley’s
open nature may have contributed to that margin of defeat and in United they
face a side that should be far too good for them, but it might be too early to
judge United’s early season form to the point where they could comfortably be
considered to beat a handicap or repeat the 4-0 thrashings given to Wigan on
recent occasions. Some bookmakers will offer 7/10 on over 2.5 goals and that
looks to be the way to go.
Advice
3 pts Over 2.5 goals (7/10 Stan James)
