1 pt win Coup Royale, 2.50 Wincanton
A competitive handicap but if Colin Tizzard’s Coup Royale can
reproduce anything close to his Kempton romp back in February, where he made a
mistake at all but three fences but still won by 8 lengths on the bridle,
having looked ready to be pulled up when turning for home, he’ll have a big
hand. Quite how he did it is hard to describe (although Joe Tizzard’s good ride
might have had a hand in that) but he’s surely got more to offer after that.
He disappointed on his comeback at Newbury after a shoddy
round of jumping (not the first time) but with that behind his belt he might
just be better this time round (as well as fitter) and he’s worth giving one
more chance as he ran too badly to be true at Newbury. In a competitive race,
he faces stiff competition from Pasco, Consligere, and Rougham, but he’s got
every chance of beating them at the weights.
0.5 pts each/way Wymott, 3.10 Sandown
In an excellent handicap chase, the value could lie with
Donald McCain’s second season chaser Wymott following a desperate effort when
pulled up last time in the Tommy Whittle Chase. One of the most depressing
aspects of that run was his supposed preference for ground with cut in it, (he has
three wins ranging on soft to heavy ground, including a Grade 2 over hurdles)
but he was probably amiss in some way or another that day and being held up can’t
have hurt him.
The ground on the chase course is set to ride tackily today,
which will be just fine for Donald McCain’s Chaser, and the best of his form (his
Hennessy Sixth hasn’t worked out totally but there are worse races around) and
his novice form seems more than fair enough for the Grade.
