1 pt each/way Robemaker, 1.35 Chester (6/1 Paddy Power)
John Gosden has enjoyed an excellent start to the season –
with Fencing, Starscope and The Fugue all running excellent races in the
Guineas at the weekend – and he can kickstart his Chester may meeting with
Robemaker in the opening handicap.
Unpalced twice last year at a track that it’s now known that
he doesn’t care for in Newmarket (in a strong handicap on the latter occasion
it should be said, with the winner bolting up at Thirsk since and the third
coming a good second in a competitive event at Kempton since, while Mull Of
Killough was second in the Lincoln and an unlucky one at that and Diverting had
come into the race on a 4 race winning streak.
He returned in a competitive mile handicap at Nottingham,
and while a fifth in that race may not seem all that impressive from a mark of
just 91, he found more trouble than one would want that day while looking as if
he’d improve for the run and a notably for a step up in trip, so he should be
given another chance, with soft ground no problem and a plum draw in 3
hopefully allowing him to get into a good position early and kick on around the
bend. Godolphin’s Flag Officer is a worthy favourite even with a 9lbs rise for
being second to Sea Moon back in June (not seen since then), although soft
ground’s an unkown for him. Absinthe and King’s Warrior will go straight
through the ground and are very hard to find fault with, but Robemaker makes
most appeal.
