Racing Today - 2nd Jan 2010

Happy New Year to you all, and here’s hoping that you enjoyed some success yesterday at Cheltenham or Exeter.

The Sussex National is the main event today, the highlight of a very solid race card at Plumpton today. Nicky Henderson is the man to follow at the moment, and his Gibb River is no better than 10/11 to follow up his debut win at Huntingdon in the 12.35, but he’s no shoe in on form and has a big burned of 11-12 to carry, which could make him vulnerable. The 2 horses most likely to take advantage may well be Extremely So and MR MUDDLE, who shaped with promise behind a good sort in Comedy Act here last time in a weak race and may be hard to beat getting a lot of weight from his 2 main rivals on the book.

Following on from a good AW Bumper win, Georgio Quecrus is seen by many as the winner of the novice’s chase (1.05), but there was just 3lbs between him and TULLAMORE DEW on hurdle ratings, and the track experience over fences of the latter might give him the edge today. Tullamore Dew created a favourable impression when putting it up to Medermit here last time and is well worth another go here.

Another good race, probably the most competitive race on the card apart from the Sussex National, is the Novice Hurdle at 1.40. Hurdling debutants Water Garden and Invictus both look exciting recruits to jumping and should go well with low weights, but this isn’t an easy introduction and they are passed over in favour of those with experience despite the strong market support. TIME FOR SPRING galloped his rivals into submission at Ascot last time and though this trip may be a bit short, the form stands up very well and similar forcing tactics are always an option here. Myster Hyde can go well, having proved his stamina at Towcester in November and was probably biting off a little more than he could chew at Cheltenham last time.

In the Sussex National (2.10), it’s not surprising to see Master Overseer as favourite having won the race last year. He’s been kept fresh since and that form rates as much the best in the field, so off a mark of 122 he’s the one to beat. Stablemate Put Etre Sivola is not the most consistent runner but showed the benefit of a previous run when easily accounting for the reopposing Kawagino in the Southern National back in November, before pulling up in the Devon National last time. He may well play a big part, but REBEL MELODY comes here at the top of his game and is only 2lb higher than when runner-up to Rey Nacarado over a slightly shorter trip here last month.

There’s also a good card at Folkestone, starting with the 2.20. Global Power will be hard to beat but giving 7lbs to YABORA might be beyond him if he literally repeats his run at Cheltenham last time where he ran well to a point in a Grade 2 hurdle.

In the 3.25, Peveril is seen as a good thing by many, having performed with credit behind Grands Crus in a Listed handicap hurdle at Haydock last time. He should be hard to beat for the red – hot Nicky Henderson Stable but he’s very short and this is a serious drop in class for CANNINGTON BROOK and he should find this a lot easier than the good novice chases at Cheltenham last month. He rates a decent bet at 9/4.
